Prince William and Kate’s PR Push: Striking a Balance or Overdoing It?

Since their promotion as the Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William, and Kate Middleton have made more public appearances, taking on greater responsibilities in representing the royal family.

While they need to preserve the monarchy’s image, some experts believe the couple might be trying a little too hard with their PR efforts.

In her piece for News.com.au, royal commentator Daniela Elser points out that the Waleses have been “straying dangerously into the Sussex-esque territory of favoring the stunty and turning to crowd-pleasing tricks.”

A recent example is when Prince William collaborated with the popular Sorted Food YouTube channel to promote his upcoming Earthshot Prize.

In the video, he serves veggie burgers using eco-friendly products and packaging. Elser finds the video reminiscent of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s “relentlessly self-promotional, dignity-lite guff.”

While a single enthusiastic video could be forgiven, Elser notes that the couple’s social media strategy appears relentlessly intent on selling themselves to the masses.

She highlights that Charles’ coronation saw the Wales outfit highlighted more than the event itself, and subsequent royal engagements have a special focus on the Waleses.

Elser concludes, “William and Kate are trying so hard not to be seen as stiff and starchy like his Pa and to sell the monarchy with all the desperation of a door-to-door double glazing salesman. It is all looking less like some social media PR-ing and more like a bells-and-whistles presidential campaign.”
